America was a dangerous place to live in the 18th century, the communities feeling under real or imagined danger from Indian attack or forays from France or Spain. The British army in America was tiny, so much of the defence was traditionally performed by the Militias. These were civilian bodies, locally manned and headed up by the great and the good, and equipped with state muskets. Their performance varied greatly, some behaving very well on the field whilst others deserted or broke and ran when under pressure. What they did do was add manpower to both armies. Militias fought for the American side, but thousands also fought as Loyalists for the Crown Forces. Militias rarely carried bayonets , so felt entitled not to close with regulars.
The figures in this box wear either 18th century civilian clothes or hunting shirts and trousers. A variety of headgear is included allowing you to also make models ideal to use as French troops in the French Indian War of 1754-63.

I bought this set a few years ago on a whelm and now have amassed a decent Army for all sides. The variety of figures in this box allows a lot of customization. If you acquire several boxes, you can mass like clothing and even create battalions. I have taken several sets worth and created two regiments of Americans in hunting shirts, a popular uniform early in the war prior to the French providing the more well known blue regimental coats. Taking several of the militia that are in vests and a few long coats, allowed me to create a regiment of soldiers in short coats (painted sleeves to match vests). I could have swapped heads with extra military ones but the civilian tricorne was worn early by some regiments to include the 8th Virginia, based on records form that period where they were issued as "macaroni hats".
If you are into the French and Indian war (Seven Years War) then you can create frontier settlers and French courier de bois for skirmishes in the 1750s.
As in all of Warlord Games plastic sets I have built, the plastic is ready to go, no clean up of cast materials and paint easily. The extra gear on the frames allow to make more unique poses.
